In 1976, the richest 1% of the population got 9% of the income, whereas in 2012 they got nearly a quarter of the income (Ariely, 2013). This shows how much income inequality has shifted within a short amount of time. It also represents how the people with the money tend to make increasingly more money every year. Some factors that skew inequality are politics, globalization and technology. The rich have a disproportionate say in the policies that benefit the rich because they have the money to support a campaign for their causes. Globalization increases the standard of living all around which helps the poor but it makes the rich now a lot richer than everybody else. Technology is a huge factor in efficiency that separates the rich from the poor because technology is available to those who can afford it while those who can’t fall behind.
